Esther is just starting her fifth HealthyWage challenge after two team challenges and two individual challenges. Her first experience with HealthyWage was a TV clip she saw on the Internet. It was during this time that she was sending her daughter off to college and thinking that, after focusing on her children, it was now time to take care of herself, especially as her daughter noted she was experiencing the “triangle of death” with diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol all related to her obesity.
Esther wanted to change that and wanted to get off medication. As a single parent who ran a 24/7 daycare service, Esther did not want to lose the money she put down on herself, and she had to get creative when it came to finding time to exercise. Thankful for her sister’s encouragement and support plus a nearby 24-hour gym, Esther began working out and reached a schedule of daily workouts even if they had to happen at 2:30am.
Her eating habits had to change too, especially when she preferred sweets over regular food. Those sweets were replaced with one 100-calorie snack per day and everything else was in moderation. Esther stopped eating fried foods and, instead, baked or used the crock pot. After losing a significant amount of weight, she will tell you how great she feels and even enjoys four-mile bike rides with her sister when previously she couldn’t even get on a bike let alone go that far. Her goal of getting off medication is also in the near future.
After recently having her blood work done, Esther is just .8 away from having normal blood sugar, which means no more pills. This is her main goal during the fifth and final HealthyWage challenge. When asked what HealthyWage has done for her, she said, “It might sound cliché but HealthyWage has helped me change my life. I can do more, am more mobile, and feel wonderful.”
