Looking to make a fun and positive impact on the health of their area, The Mohawk Valley Wellness Council is sponsoring Get Lean for Green, a 12-week weight loss challenge that began Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Mohawk Valley’s communities were invited to bet on better health for the chance to win $5,000.

The challenge is comprised of teams of five and each team member pays $60 to participate. This entry fee is put into a jackpot that is split between all teams that lose an average of 6 percent of their starting body weight. The team that loses the most weight on average, not to exceed 16 percent of their starting weight, splits a $5,000 grand prize.

Most excitingly, partner organizations the Masonic Care Community and Adirondack Financial Services organized a kick off event which encouraged participants to get involved, even providing a professional photographer to take the teams’ “before” photos. Participant giveaways and incentives and vendors offering information on healthy resources in the community made the event even more memorable.

“Get Lean for Green is a great way for our community to jumpstart their weight loss journey and learn about healthy lifestyle choices that will be of life-long benefit,” said Noelle Murphy, a member of the Mohawk Valley Wellness Council and competition organizer. “By asking people to invest in their success it increases their motivation to reach their weight loss goals. And working together as a team gives participants the support they need to see the competition through and learn new healthy habits from one another.”
